'These are the same woods', he pointed ahead
'Robert Frost Trail', the signs read.
A part of me wanted to apply the brake
but I continued to drive the car, instead.
Was it the woods, the flake or the lake
Assuming it is those, was a big mistake.
It is the man, the master, the guru
who gave these a life, with his own take.
Charming are his verses, also admired by Nehru
At the Amherst college he taught a lucky few.
Envy I do, the benefits they reap.
With him as my teacher, I wish I grew.
A poet, they say, mature with sorrow that's deep
'Enjoy every moment', is a motto I keep.
There are smiles to go before I weep
There are smiles to go before I weep.
In high school, I read the poem 'Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening' by Robert Frost. The description of the place was scarily cold. Probably the author's name played a part in making the place feel colder. I made a resolve never to set foot on such a place especially in the dark.
Robert Frost was a lecturer at Amherst college, MA. Last weekend, I visited my pals at UMass Amherst, MA and they live almost right across 'The Robert Frost Trail'.
I have spent four cold winters in the snow capital of northeast USA and have come across more than half a dozen snow storms and even now when I read his poem, I somehow feel that those woods are still colder...

Hi B,
I have read that poem as you said during school days, and i can only remember thinking it would be good to see snowfall thro woods, and that wish of mine was fulfilled during the first snow strom in Feb 05.
I can recollect talking abt it with my frndz, saying it would be wonderful to have snow stroms in India too.
We were a gang of four frndz calling ourselves the Frenzy Four, and exploring the hills around my school in search of mysterys to solve like the famous five. I remember talking abt this poem and saying that there definitely is something mysterious about the person to whom the woods belonged to, we used to make up our own stories. Good old days...
After reading your blog, i was mailing all my old frndz abt this, with whom i got in touch after 15 yrs thro namesdatabase.com.
Hi Pura,
I am amazed at how many people like this poem.

ooh this sure is a very popular poem... probably mainly because its subtlety can suit almost everybody's life.
I even have friends who have "miles to go before i sleep" posters over their desks to make sure they stay awake all night and study/work
A poet's inspiration is somewhat deep... he doesn’t phrase it for the sake of rhyme but because a monotonous flow of words will not reflect the rhythm of the feeling. Guess that’s the same cause of your verses! Nice one…

Thanks.
yep! his was a very very simple poem. He came, he stopped, he left. Avvlo dhaan matter. Only on a much closer look I was able to detect the pattern of the rhyming words. And true..everyone can relate to his last four lines.
